July 15, email to John Danford, Liberty Fund

Dear John,

I know you will be interested in reading about my book in progress, “April Fools, Captain May,” which is already circulating in some very important places.  (This letter is now part of it.)  You will be one of the important foci of the work, by the by, since you have taught me so much about the integrity of intellectual conservatism.  Not in your words, I must say.  As a minor, skeptical philosopher, I attend to peoples’ actions, not their utterances.

I must say I find you as pious as Plato’s Euthyphro.  He bravely stood up for law and order when his dad’s life was on the line; you bravely stand up for war when your son’s life is on the line.  The West Point class of 2006, of which Cadet David Danford is a member, will go to fight the war that brave men like his father have argued for it over the objections of cowardly men like me, and I believe you deserve literary immortality for your pious position.

If you want to discuss my book (parts excerpted below) and your inclusion, or just things in general, please get in touch.  If you have done any recent writing that needs some work, please send it to me.  I’m always willing to help you prop up your prose and improve your ideas.  After all, you were the man who taught me that shabby thinking was a sin – and you were right.  Were you listening while you were teaching?

Regards – Captain May
