Poem for Mary Trix Embed

(Dedicated to Journalistic Art)

I feel

like a chump captain in a Western reel,

with his dancehall girl who sang a song

for him alone (she said), then done him wrong!

So much for thoughts of Chivalry,

or the honor of the Cavalry…

Now for some self pity, 90 proof:

I’m not the first to be made a goof!

It happens to everyone, A right through Z…

Why the hell did I think “It won’t happen to me!”?

That I hadn’t been fooled was my greatest boast!

(I guess that’s the part that hurts the most…)

She didn’t believe me, or (foul and worst)

she thought she’d damn well be the first!

To tame my pride, she used the whip

It wasn’t a slip…

Well, here’s to my dame of the sacred heart,

with open arms – and legs apart!

So now it’s back to the trail of tears,

which only lengthens with the years;

even heroics are boring me now – it’s depressing

when there’s nobody left worth impressing.

‘Cause even if millions praise your name

it all turns out the goddamn same:

It’s ashes to ashes, and dust back to dust.

We’re born into terror and die without trust.

Captain Eric Holmes May, USA, MI

PS:  A couplet from Ghost Troop, 3/7 Cavalry for all Bushlings (you, Thom and Toby included):

Here is a thought that should haunt you the most:

You can’t kill a man who’s already a ghost.

Dux May, qui fortasse morturus est, sed contentus est, nam et hodie dulce et decorum est pro patria – et contra regem – mori.
