August 16, letter, Rachel Corrie, peace activist and hero

Hello Rachel.  I was moved to tears when your mom and dad talked about you in front of a group of sorrowful Middle East folks in Houston.  I just learned your name, just saw your picture, but I already knew you.  You were the brave woman I heard about back on March 16.  You stood up to an Israeli bulldozer that was destroying Palestinian property, and the bulldozer destroyed you.

You walked the walk, and now you’re immortal.  May your fame rightly shine through the shadows of the night.

Do you know, you speak to me from the photo.  Your eyes say that you have seen it all in Palestine.  They are the eyes of Coleman of America and G of Germany in World War II; they are the eyes of T. E. Lawrence in the desert; they are the eyes of a warrior aggrieved by war.  They are my eyes, too.

You were brave, Miss Corrie, and I am so sorry that you had to prove it.  I guess sometimes dying is the only proof.  Your father and mother are kind and bear their grief with dignity. I think I’d better just let you finish this one for yourself

“Frail flesh, and brittle bone cannot endure

When the iron wheels of war traverse the land;

Like maddened beasts, they trample all that’s pure…”

Rachel Corrie
