Wednesday, April 23 – Saline Louisiana, Mrs. May

Beloved,

I have made camp in the woods some 50 yards from Louisiana Parish Road 155.  The locals at the café where I dined say that rain is coming in, so I have the tent up nearby…

I’ve been finding heart-shaped notes from an admirer.  I’ve put them in the plastic bag that holds a snapshot from a far drier place:  the Grand Canyon, there in the background on the day we made it from Houston on the tandem bicycle.  I look at your face and feel happiness; I consider that we will be apart for a while and feel sadness.  I suppose nothing ever changes, and I suppose that’s good.

The afternoon’s ride was cool, and tonight there will be a chill.  The roadsides rolled along today over gentle hills, covered with wildflowers of every color.  There were purples, oranges, pinks, yellows, blues and reds, flung across a canvass of green.  Spring flourishes, but has not surrendered to the oppressive heat of summer.  Take all this beauty and put in a frame of fragrant honeysuckle, then you would have a picture of my love for you…, and, I believe, of your love for me.  We’re a natural tandem pair, Mrs. May.

Please give my love to the girl, the boy, the dog and the cat.  I’ll be careful, for you are with me.  I love you, Eric.
